Dawson was born in NYC, and her mother is a singer/writer. She was raised by her mother and stepfather, Greg Dawson, who her mom has since divorced. When her mother was 21 years old she moved Rosario and the family to an abandoned building on the Lower East Side. Her parents renovated it and taught Rosario a valuable lesson about working to make things better for yourself. When she was young she appeared on Sesame Street. Then at age 15, Rosario was discovered by a photographer who asked her to star in the 1995 movie, Kids. From there, her career took off.

However, Rosario Dawson is not just a talented actress, producer and singer. This woman is a political activist and advocate for human rights. Where do we even begin with all the outstanding work this woman has done? Well, for one, she supports environmental groups, LGBTQ organizations and nonprofits that fight for the rights of diverse citizens like, Voto Latino. Additionally, she’s on the board for V-Day, the non-profit group that raising money for anti-violence groups by performing the Vagina Monologues. Oh, she’s a spokesperson for groups like, Doctors Without Borders, Save The Children and The Nature Conservancy. With the rise of the Me Too movement, Dawson bravely came forward to share her story and support the women coming forward. In 2012, she worked with the company SodaStream International for their Unbottle the World Day, helping to raise awareness about the environmental impact of plastic bottles and cans. One of the boards she sits on is for Scenarios USA. This organization encourages youth to express themselves through filmmaking in their various programming. Basically, Dawson is not just a star in superhero shows, she is a real-life superhero! If every celebrity gave back like Dawson, the world would surely be a better place.
